Well, for starters, it's *not* about economy. It's about the shift to the right that takes place in European countries since three, four years. The more conservative parties took power, but they did so, by usurping socialist ideas. So when conservative Americans accuse Obama of left wing ideas, they are just plain wrong, as in Europe such ideas have become mainstream.
