The German villains in DIE HARD confuse me?

In Die Hard, the clic action film with bruce willis, the villains appear unmistakably german, but when Hans Gruber is on the hunt for john with his henchman Karl, he proclaims "Schie�en Sie Fenster" and Karl doesnt understand, leading to and english translation being needed "shoot the gl". why is this,i dont understand?
