To do a sliding stop properly, take the bridle off. A real honest-to-god stop will happen with no pulling, no bit, no reins. The moment the rider cues with an exhale and a strong seat, the horse should stop dead. NO REINS OR BIT. Take off the bridle, tie a soft, thin rope loosely around the neck as an "emergency break" and just breath your horse into a halt.
