What are the effects of hydrochloric acid on plants?

HCl is well known for killing off the water plant life of several ponds in the adirondacks by acid rain. Each living thing (including plants)usually must live in a narrow range of pH (acidity/basic). So, I suspect too much acid would kill a plant.
